description: Where your keywords come from, what the numbers mean and how RankJet picks them
---

Keywords are the searches you want your site to show up for. RankJet keeps them on the **Keywords** page, scores each one and turns the best ones into articles. You can let it choose on its own or pick every keyword yourself.

## Where keywords come from

- **Your business.** When you add your website, RankJet reads it and your business profile and proposes the topics your customers search for
- **Google search data.** Every keyword gets its monthly search volume and ranking difficulty, including keywords you type yourself
- **Your Search Console.** Once connected, it adds your real positions to keywords already on the list. It never adds keywords of its own
- **You.** Type your own with **Add Keywords**, or use **Expand with AI** to get related ideas from a few starting words

Suggestions are checked against your business. A keyword that is a competitor's name, has the wrong search intent or is unrelated to what you sell goes straight to the archive, with the reason shown under it.

## What the numbers mean

| Column | What it tells you |
| --- | --- |
| Volume | Average monthly Google searches for the keyword |
| Volume trend (12mo) | How searches changed over the last 12 months |
| Ranking difficulty | How hard it is to rank on Google, from 0 to 100. Lower is easier |
| Opportunity | High, Medium or Low. It weighs search volume against ranking difficulty, so High means traffic that is easier to win |
| Position, Position trend, Ranking page | Where your site ranks today and which of your pages ranks. Shown once Search Console is connected |

Click a keyword to open its page: the search volume chart and, with Search Console, your impressions, clicks and every page of yours that ranks for it. When two of your pages compete for the same search, the page warns you.

## Automatic selection

**Automatic keyword selection** is on by default. RankJet picks the keywords with the highest opportunity and schedules an article for each on your publishing days, so the calendar stays filled ahead. When the list runs low, it adds new keywords on its own. To choose every keyword yourself, turn it off in **Settings**, on the **Project** tab, under **Content automation**.

## Add, schedule and archive

- **Add Keywords** opens a box where you type keywords and press Enter after each one
- **Add to calendar** schedules the selected keywords on your next free publishing days. Keywords already on the calendar are skipped
- The star saves a keyword to the **Saved** list
- **Archive** takes a keyword out of planning: it is never written about or suggested again, and **Unarchive** brings it back
- **Delete permanently** sits in the archive view. A deleted keyword can be suggested again later, so archive the ones you never want

## Why similar keywords are merged

Two keywords that are the same search written differently, such as the same words in another order, would give you two articles competing for one result. RankJet keeps the keyword already on your list and drops the copy. It also spreads articles across different subjects, and it skips a keyword when two of your pages already compete for it, so your own pages do not compete with each other on Google.
